Valheim / Playing with friends

Can your Valheim friends keep playing after the host logs off?

A shared world can run on its own schedule. Decide who needs access, which platforms must connect and who will look after the save.

Find your next decision

If a friend starts your Valheim world from inside their game, everyone loses access to that session when the host quits. To let people return while that friend is offline, run the world on a dedicated server. Its computer and server program must stay on and reachable whenever someone wants to play. The person who set it up can leave their own Viking at home.

Who wants the keys on a Tuesday?

Take a week from your group’s actual calendar. If all four of you meet on Friday to sail together, let the regular host open the world on Friday. Nobody has to look after a server between trips. The boat, dock and supplies can wait for the next evening that person hosts. Agree on a finishing time so somebody halfway through a roof has a chance to put the last piece down.

Now give one builder a free Tuesday morning and a second player a late shift. If either wants to work on the same longhouse alone, the Friday host’s availability has become a problem. A dedicated server lets each arrive separately. It can run during agreed hours, too. If someone will reliably start it on weekday evenings, tell the group those hours before promising round-the-clock access.

Make one more agreement while everyone is together. Is it fine to finish the dock alone? Should the first voyage or a particular boss wait for the whole crew? A server can make the world available at different times. Your group decides which discoveries it wants to share.

Check the guest list before choosing a server

Ask each friend where they launch Valheim. Two people can both say “PC” while one uses Steam and the other uses the Microsoft Store. A dedicated server using Steam’s multiplayer service admits Steam users. For a group spread across storefronts or consoles, choose the crossplay service. A join code gives invited friends a way to find the running world. Keeping the code after everyone signs out does nothing to keep that world open.

Iron Gate lists Windows, Linux, Mac, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2. Its Xbox guidance makes a practical distinction for a console household. An Xbox can join a crossplay-enabled dedicated server, but the dedicated server application runs elsewhere. A PS5 player should also check the “PS5 only” setting if a mixed-platform invitation fails. Iron Gate added a message for that case in its October 28 patch.

If anyone plays from Egypt, settle that detail first. Iron Gate says its crossplay service is unavailable there and identifies Steam-only multiplayer as an available option. That changes which friends can use the same setup.

Check the build before changing the world

After a patch, ask what each person updated, including whoever maintains the server. Record the game version and whether anyone deliberately selected a test build. Compare the answers with Iron Gate’s notes for that particular update. On October 28 the studio said patch 1.0.21 would reach platforms at different times while crossplay remained available. A different download date alone is a poor reason to move the world or start another one.

Ask about mods separately. Iron Gate offers no official mod support, and its 1.0 FAQ warns that an update can leave a mod waiting on its author. If a friend describes the shared world as needing a particular mod, find out what it changes and which players depend on it before inviting a console user. For a new mixed-platform group, agreeing on an unmodified world gives everyone a common starting point.

Put a name beside the save

For an existing world, have the host name a landmark everyone will recognize. A boathouse with a missing roof will do. Agree which copy people should return to. Iron Gate’s dedicated server can select an existing world. That leaves a separate question for the owner of the current save. Can they make it available on the chosen server? Read the manual supplied with the server tool before committing the group to a move.

Crossplay lets friends visit the same place. It gives a visitor no automatic copy to host later. Iron Gate documents save access between Xbox and the Microsoft Store PC version and says the other platforms lack cross-platform save sync. If the only copy you know about is on a console, establish a supported route for that particular save first. Keep the original while you check. Two copies called the same thing are an easy way to spend Saturday building in the wrong one.

Decide who can bring the world back

Choose someone to maintain the server and someone the group can reach if it goes down. Agree who can invite guests, change permissions and approve going back to an earlier save. Iron Gate separates administrator privileges from its permitted-player list. Once that list has entries, everyone outside it is excluded. A friend who wants to plant carrots only needs permission to join.

Ask the operator where the backups live, how far back they go and what progress would be lost on a restore. The server manual describes automatic backup settings and its supported shutdown procedure. Use the manual that accompanies the installed tool when it is time to do that work. Give players notice before planned downtime and tell them which save will be in use when the world reopens.

A world with an owner, and a timetable

Keep the player-hosted world if your friends already share a play night. Choose a dedicated server when someone needs to come home to the same hall on a different schedule. Before the next invitation, name the person who runs it, agree when it will be open and make sure everyone knows which world to join.
