For a group mixing Windows PCs with consoles or phones, start by checking Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. A group on Windows, Mac and Linux can use Java Edition. Java and Bedrock do not join the same official Realm. Owning both on a Windows PC gives you a choice of clients, not a bridge between them.
Ask for the device and the edition
“I play Minecraft on PC” is not enough information. Ask each person which device they will use and which edition they actually launch. Windows can be part of either group; a console player changes the native edition decision. Mojang’s current Realms page lists Bedrock across consoles, mobile and Windows, and Java across Windows, Linux and macOS. [M2]
Write one line for each friend before anyone buys hosting: device, edition and the world they want to join. This is a planning exercise, not an account-transfer procedure. It prevents a familiar mistake: treating the shared Minecraft name as proof that every installed version speaks to every other one.

Choose around the person with fewer options
Consider a Windows player inviting a friend on a console. Checking Bedrock on the Windows machine is the useful starting point. Now consider two friends with only a Mac and a console. There is no common officially supported native edition across that pair of devices in the listed platform support. A Realm subscription does not fix that mismatch. [M1, M2]
The practical decision is whether somebody has access to another supported device. Settle that before discussing a seed, an elaborate base or a monthly plan. This guide does not assess third-party server bridges, compatibility layers or unofficial launchers. Their existence would not make them equivalent to the native paths described here.
Hosting is a separate decision
Realms is Mojang’s hosted private-server service. Invited players can access the active world while its owner is offline, but cross-play stays within the same edition. The current plans distinguish Bedrock Realms, Bedrock Realms Plus and Java Realms. Do not rely on older shorthand claiming that every Bedrock subscription is called Realms Plus. [M2]
A small group that only plays together on Saturday has a different hosting question from a group that builds throughout the week. First establish compatible editions, then compare the hosting options against that schedule. This article does not rank hosting providers or promise that paying for hosting removes account restrictions.

Keep the world and its extras in the conversation
Microsoft’s creator documentation identifies different Java and Bedrock world formats. Do not treat switching clients as evidence that an existing world, its custom content and its behavior will transfer unchanged. [M3]
Ask the host whether the group is joining an established world or beginning a new one. If a specific mod or add-on is central to the plan, verify that exact item for the chosen edition. Preserve the existing world while investigating a move; this decision guide supplies no conversion steps and certifies no conversion tool.

Agree on the destination before paying
The useful result is a short shared answer: “We are using this edition, on these supported devices, joining this world.” Only then check the appropriate current hosting plan and each console’s online-play requirements. Mojang notes that console multiplayer can require a separate platform subscription. [M2]
For another example of choosing the host around the group, read our Stardew Valley existing-farm co-op guide. The games have different rules; the shared lesson is to settle the group’s real constraints before committing to a world.
