Our take
This is the controller Microsoft ships in the Series X|S box, sold on its own. It is the default for a reason: the layout is the platform standard, it pairs to Windows over Bluetooth as well as to the console, and the textured triggers and bumpers are a real improvement over the previous generation.
The one thing to know before you buy is power. The standard pad runs on two AA cells out of the box; a rechargeable pack is a separate purchase, and over a couple of years that gap closes a meaningful part of the price difference to the Elite Series 2.
